Sleeve Support
Any ideas on support braces or sleeves for an arthritic knee that will keep pain and injury to a minimum?

In 1993, I suffered a strain injury of my right knee, requiring PT but not surgery. It was similar to a torn ACL but not as serious. However, as of about 4 years ago, it has developed arthritic symptoms, inflammation, and pain after I'm on my feet for more than a few hours. I have a temp job coming up in which moving heavy furniture is involved. Im aware of safety practices regarding lifting, but since the damage has already been done, I need options involving taping or bracing the knee to keep pain and further injury to a minimum.

Osteoarthritis is a condition characterized by the breakdown and eventual loss of cartilage in one or more joints. Cartilage—the connective tissue found at the end of the bones in the joints—protects and cushions the bones during movement. When cartilage deteriorates or is lost, symptoms develop that can restrict one’s ability to easily perform daily activities.

You may want to look at the DonJoy OA Lite Osteoarthritis Knee Brace. The OA Lite is a customizable sleeve-style wrap for mild osteoarthritis. It is easy to apply and remove.

Even if you choose a different brace here's more information so that you can make an educated choice.

What to expect from a Osteoarthritis (OA) knee brace

Braces cannot cure OA and may not be right for everyone. However, it is a viable solution for many people. The ideal candidates are typically active people who are motivated to strengthen their muscles and willing to wear a brace to realize the benefits of this form of treatment.

Discuss treatment goals with your doctor and others on your health care team before you get a brace.

Don’t expect a brace to feel good from the start. It may take from a week to a month to get used to how the brace feels on your leg. Be patient. It took a long time for your knee OA to develop.

Bracing has come close to eliminating pain for some people with knee OA, while others experience moderate relief.

It is estimated that four out of every five office workers will experience sore knee joints during their lifetime. Many people at work will sit with their knees bent, and this can cause adhesion in your knees. People will often sit like this for hours and this can be uncomfortable. This can also lead to numbness, soreness and moderate to severe sore knee joints.

Most business owners realize that their employees do suffer from physical ailments and boredom while at work. This is why many offices have started to implement various physical suggestions in order to make their workers more productive. In fact, in some countries like Japan, they actually carry out entire on-the-job exercise sessions with their employees daily, in order to keep them physically fit and alert on the job.

One addition to most offices has been that of a phone head piece. This works like headphones and is hooked up to the workers telephone. This allows the worker to stand and move about their work area while still taking and carrying out business phone calls. It allows workers to continue doing their job, while at the same time stretching and moving their legs to avoid the effects of sore knee joints.

3.) What Your Physician Might Tell You!

Many physicians recommend that office workers who are confined to desks with little mobility for long lengths of time to actually stretch their legs out straight beneath their desk for at least 15 minutes on every hour. This allows blood flow to return to normal and will keep knees and joints from experiencing long-term pain.

4.) Knee Braces For Support, Pain Reduction & Protection

So what happens when you are out of work? Does your knee pain always stay at the office? That's right. You already can answer that one! - Many times if you have knee pain or instability problems, you will want to seriously consider getting a knee brace. These braces can help provide you with meaningful support and help to reduce your knee pain as a result. Many individuals will refrain from taking pain pills as a result of increased knee support.

5.) In Summary Regarding Your Knee Pain

A final suggestion is for office workers not to sit at their desks on their breaks or to sit at all. In fact, it is better for individuals who are confined to their desks at their job to move and walk around on their breaks. This assists in alleviating sore knee joints and gets the blood and heart pumping, which will also make the person more mentally alert for when they return to their desk.
