Belt Rack
Will i do serious damage to my p/s rack and pinnion, by disconnecting the drivebelt and driving long term?
pwr steering hose has a bad leak. replacment hose (aftermarket) is about $300. Car is not worth much, but its doing our family right now. This is already a 2nd hose from a wrecker, lasted less than a year. Even used ones are getting expensive! A bit silly buying tranny fluid to fill up and see it all over the road,& mates driveways etc.Car is a 92 toyota camry sv21. Am thinking of disconnecting pump belt and driving as manual steering. I imagine extra wear on tie rods, or will it ruin the rack totally? Thanking you!
It won’t hurt anything. However, if you plan on running it that way permanantly, you also need to disconnect and plug the hoses for a couple of reasons. First of all, if its leaking, until you plug the hoses and drain the pump, then for a while you are still going to leak fluid from under your car even with the pump disconnected. Also, with the hoses plugged, the fluid that is left in the rack and pinion will provide a little lubrication and keep dirt out f the system. Dirt in the system could eventually clog it up and cause an even harder steering condition.
I’ve actually run into a similer situation as your’s with a car that blew power steering hoses left and right no matter what I did. What I finally did was went to a company that made industrial hydraulic hoses and had them make me a hose. The one they made me turned out to cost me a fraction of what the replacement hose would have cost me and I never had another problem with that hose blowing. If you decide to do this, take the hose off and take it to them so they can know what sizes are on each end and what turn may need to be made on metal flare tubes to clear accessories. Just a suggestion.
